EHCP

What is an EHCP?

The EHCP, which means the Education and Health Care Plan, is a legal document which sets out the education, healthcare and social care needs of a child or young person for whom extra support is needed in school, beyond that which the school can provide. It is a holistic plan which should bring together the support of all relevant professionals under one document. We recognise that not all young people who have an EHCP are in school and are experienced with supporting through EOTAS (Education Other Than At School) or another process.

The EHCP will explore and secure appropriate provision and funding for the young person, ensuring that all needs are met through reasonable adjustments, access to specialists and outside agencies.

Supporting a young person who has an EHCP

At Fun Development we apply our knowledge and expertise of EHC plans to direct our work with your young person and ensure we are meeting their relevant targets. The EHCP, and supporting documents, guides our planning of short and long term goals. One of the strengths of the Fun Development team is our variety of experience and specialist knowledge; we will often come together as a team to direct and discuss planning activities which will best support the young person and help them make progress towards their EHCP targets.

Supporting parents with the EHCP process

Here at Fun Development we understand that acquiring and maintaining an EHCP is not always a straight forward process. Working across different authorities has given us excellent insight into the practice of Local Authorities and we know what a good EHCP looks like. Our team can support parents with the initial application and offer advice on seeking reports from other professionals.

Once you receive the draft EHCP it is essential to ensure that it truly captures the strengths and difficulties of your child and that targets are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely (SMART). Fun Development can support you to get the plan to be an accurate representation of your child’s needs, ready for you to return it to the Local Authority for finalisation.

As the plan progresses, we will contribute to and support in Annual Reviews and provide written reports to show progress in specific target areas.

If you are struggling to get your Local Authority to agree to issue an EHCP, we have experience in mediation and can support you with this process.

Supporting schools with the EHCP process

For the young people who are in education, we regularly work alongside school staff to support specific targets such as Speech and Language or Dyslexia. Where school attendance is not possible Fun Development will work with a child within the home to a plan including school, parents and the young person.
